Can you really unblur a photo, and is it free?
Yes, for some kinds of blur. AdSkull's free tool uses AI to sharpen images degraded by compression, resizing, or soft focus — not by reconstructing lost detail from nothing, but by intelligently reconstructing plausible edges and texture. Upload for free, no signup; the download is capped at 1024px, full resolution with a free account.
Not all blur is equal. Compression softness (a photo forwarded on WhatsApp a few times, or an old JPEG saved at low quality) responds very well to AI sharpening. Genuine motion blur or a photo taken out of focus responds less — the model can improve it, but can't fully undo physics.
When unblurring helps most (and when it can't)
Best for
- Old family photos that look soft after scanning
- Photos re-compressed multiple times by messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.)
- Screenshots or downloaded images that look pixelated when zoomed
- Sharpening slightly out-of-focus product or portrait shots
Not the right pick for
- Heavy motion blur from a moving subject or shaky camera (physics can't be undone — some improvement, but not a full fix)
- Photos deliberately blurred or pixelated for privacy (this tool won't and shouldn't reverse intentional redaction)
- Extremely low-resolution faces under roughly 150px, where there's simply too little source data
Pro tip
If your photo also needs to be bigger, not just sharper, unblur first, then run the result through our free upscaler for the crispest final image.
Why images get blurry — and which blur is fixable
Upscaling blur happens when an image is displayed larger than its native resolution — very fixable. Compression smudge comes from aggressive JPEG or messaging-app compression (WhatsApp and Telegram both re-compress every photo you send) — also fixable, often dramatically. A slight focus miss, where the camera focused just in front of or behind the subject, improves partially. Genuine motion blur, from a moving subject or camera shake, mostly doesn't respond — no AI model invents information a blurred exposure never captured. Deliberate privacy blur or pixelation is a different case entirely: it's intentional redaction, and no tool here will or should reverse it.
Why WhatsApp and Telegram photos look blurry — and how to fix it
Messaging apps compress every photo you send to save bandwidth, and if a photo gets forwarded through a chain of chats, it gets recompressed each time — the visual equivalent of photocopying a photocopy. That's why a photo can leave your camera looking sharp and arrive on a friend's phone looking soft and blocky. This is exactly the kind of softness AI sharpening handles well, because the original detail is still statistically present in the compressed image — the model just needs to reconstruct it.
Rescuing old scanned family photos
Scanned prints often come out softer than the original photo — the scanning process itself introduces some blur, on top of whatever degradation the physical print picked up over the years. This is one of the best use cases for AI sharpening: the underlying image usually has more real detail than the soft scan shows, and the model can recover a meaningfully sharper result. Pair with our free upscaler afterward if you also want a bigger print-ready file.
Can it sharpen text in screenshots?
Partially. Screenshots that are blurry because they were resized down and back up, or compressed through messaging, often sharpen well — the same mechanism as photo compression softness. Text that was genuinely small and low-resolution to begin with (tiny mobile UI captured at low zoom, for instance) has less real detail to recover, so expect a moderate improvement rather than a perfect fix.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really unblur a photo?+
For some kinds of blur, yes. Compression softness and mild focus issues respond well to AI sharpening, which reconstructs plausible edges and texture rather than just increasing contrast. Genuine motion blur can't be fully undone — no algorithm can recover information a blurred exposure never captured, though the model can still improve it somewhat.
Is it really free, without a watermark?+
Yes. Upload an image, verify you're human, and download a sharpened version up to 1024px with no account and no watermark. Free accounts get 5 images per day; sign up free for full resolution.
Can it fix old scanned family photos?+
Yes — this is one of the best use cases. Scanning often introduces its own softness on top of whatever the original print had, and the model can meaningfully sharpen the result. Combine with our free upscaler afterward for a bigger, print-ready file.
Why do WhatsApp or Telegram photos get blurry, and can this fix it?+
Messaging apps recompress every photo, and forwarding through multiple chats compresses it again each time. This is exactly the kind of softness AI sharpening handles well, since the underlying detail is usually still statistically present in the compressed file.
Can it sharpen small text in screenshots?+
Partially — screenshots blurred by resizing or compression sharpen well, but text that was genuinely tiny and low-resolution to begin with has less real detail to recover, so expect a moderate rather than perfect improvement.
