How do you fix a pixelated image?

Ordinary resizing can't solve this: interpolation only averages neighboring pixels, and as the classic imaging literature puts it, interpolation can never add detail that isn't already present. Generative reconstruction is the piece that changed — the model predicts what the blocks originally depicted, instead of just blending them.

Pixelated vs blurry — they're different problems
People use the words interchangeably, but the damage is opposite in character. Pixelation is hard-edged: square blocks with abrupt color boundaries, produced when too few pixels get stretched over too large an area. Blur is soft-edged: detail smeared smoothly by a missed focus, camera motion, or heavy smoothing. The distinction matters because the fixes differ — pixelation calls for resolution reconstruction (this tool), while blur calls for deconvolution-style sharpening (our unblur tool). A quick self-test: zoom in. If you see squares, you're pixelated; if you see smears, you're blurred.
Why your images keep coming out pixelated
Three mechanisms account for nearly all of it. First, enlargement: a 400px logo dropped into a 1200px slot has each pixel painted nine times as large. Second, platform compression: social networks and messaging apps recompress every upload to save bandwidth, and after a few reshare cycles the compression blocks become visible squares. Third, undersized sources: a 72 DPI web graphic sent to a 300 DPI print job simply has a quarter of the pixels the printer needs, which is why so many prints come back blocky when the on-screen version looked fine.
Why Photoshop-style resampling can't unpixelate
Classical interpolation — bilinear, bicubic, Lanczos — computes new pixels as weighted averages of old ones. Imaging references have made the same point for decades: no interpolator can add detail that isn't in the source. Worse, every classical algorithm trades between three artifacts — blurring, jagged 'staircase' aliasing, and halo rings along edges — so enlarging a pixelated image with them yields bigger, smoother blocks at best. Generative models broke this ceiling by bringing outside knowledge: trained on millions of sharp photos, they recognize that a particular block pattern used to be an eye or a letterform, and draw it back in.
The pixel-art exception (and the privacy question)
Two cases where unpixelating is the wrong move. Pixel art places every block deliberately — sprites and retro game graphics are supposed to look that way, and 'restoring' them ruins the work; the emulator community built dedicated scalers (hqx, ScummVM-style filters) that enlarge pixel art while honoring its style. And images pixelated for privacy — faces, license plates, documents — are intentional redaction. This tool doesn't reverse censorship, and it's worth understanding that any AI 'reconstruction' of a censored face would be a statistical guess, not a recovery of the real person. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a pixelated image really be restored?+
Genuinely pixelated photos — enlarged, compressed, or saved small — restore surprisingly well, because the block pattern still encodes where edges and shapes were. What can't happen is true recovery of information that was never captured: an extremely tiny source produces a plausible reconstruction, not a guaranteed-accurate one.
What's the difference between pixelated and blurry?+
Zoom in and look at the damage. Square blocks with hard boundaries = pixelation (too few pixels for the display size). Smooth smearing = blur (focus, motion, or smoothing). This tool targets the first; our free unblur tool targets the second.
Can it fix pixelated text or logos?+
Moderately pixelated text usually comes back readable, since letterforms are highly predictable shapes. Severely blocky text (a handful of pixels per letter) may reconstruct into the wrong glyphs — check the result before publishing. For logos, if any vector original exists, using it beats reconstruction every time.
Will it unpixelate a censored face or blurred license plate?+
No. Deliberate pixelation is redaction, and the tool doesn't undo it. Even setting policy aside, an AI can only fabricate a statistically plausible face — not reveal the actual one — so the output would be fiction presented as fact.
Why do my images pixelate when I print them?+
Screens get away with ~72–96 DPI, but print needs around 300 DPI — roughly four times the pixel density. An image that fills your monitor can still be far too small for paper. Fix the pixelation here, then check the print-size table on our upscaler page to hit the right dimensions.
